All four 南 Alabama nominees named 学者 by the Goldwater 奖学金 Program
Sophomore 荣誉 Biomedical Science major Richard Fu, sophomore 荣誉 Chemistry major Hannah Giannini, junior 荣誉 Meteorology major Samantha Michlowitz, and sophomore CIS major John Pomerat were all named 学者 from the Barry Goldwater 奖学金 and Excellence in Education Program on Friday, March 27, 2020.
Having a Scholar be named from any institution on any given year is a recognition in itself given the prestige of the Goldwater 奖学金 Program. 四种都有 nominees be recognized as 学者 is unprecedented. Notable as well is the sophomore cohort representing 南’s 2020 awardees which historically represents 20% of those 公认的全国.
的 Barry Goldwater 奖学金 and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Arizona Senator Barry M. 戈德华特, who served 30 years of service in the U.S. 参议院. 的 purpose of the Foundation is to ensure a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these 字段.
As stated in the Scholar Press Release, this class of Goldwater 学者 represent “...an estimated pool of over 5,000 college sophomores and juniors, 1343 natural science, engineering and mathematics students were nominated by 461 academic institutions to compete for the 2020 Goldwater scholarships. Of students who reported, 191 of the 学者 are men, 203 are women, and virtually all intend to obtain a Ph.D. 作为他们的 最高程度目标.
